Soil
Soil health is a key factor to the success of your garden. Healthy soil is alive and full of active microorganisms, most of which are invisible to the naked eye. Healthy soil is loose, holds moisture, and has an adequate supply of organic plant nutrients. But the fine sand we have here in Florida doesn't hold water or nutrients very well. We can improve your soil with many Florida-friendly organic amendments, such as compost, manure, and worm castings. By doing so, we'll increase the nutrient content of the soil, help soil retain moisture, and also stabilize soil pH. Organic matter also attracts earthworms, and supports beneficial bacteria and other microbiological activity in the soil. Soil amendments are especially helpful for flower beds and vegetable gardens, since these plants need plenty of nutrients and moisture to perform well. Our special blend of organic garden soil is included with every plant when choosing one our landscape design edible garden packages.
Rain and Water Conservation
Conserve water and reduce storm water runoff with our custom rain barrels.
The demand for water is at an all-time high. In the summer months watering lawns and gardens typically make up 40% of household water use. With seasonal droughts, restrictions and bans on lawn watering, and the increasing cost of water, it makes sense to use rain water instead of municipal water for outdoor uses. Unless it is collected, rain water runs off impervious surfaces, such as roofs and pavement, gathering pollutants which often end up in local streams, rivers, ponds, lakes and marine waters. Keeping and using rain water on your property helps reduce pollution, erosion and improves local watershed health.
Water quantity: Just 1/4 inch of rainfall on a typical roof will fill a rain barrel. Just a modest amount of rainfall can supply much or all of your outdoor watering needs - a full rain barrel will water a 200 square foot garden. A good rule of thumb is that 1 inch of rain on a 1000 sq ft roof yields 623 gallons of water.
Water quality: Rain water is "soft," or free from minerals and chemicals such as chlorine, fluoride, and calcium that are often present in municipal water. Rain water is ideal for watering plants.
Reduce your dependence on the city water supply and lower your water bill by harvesting rain water. We can set you up with a custom rain barrel system.

Don't want a large edible landscape, but love the idea of a no-mow yard/lawnless ?
We have several alternatives to growing grass or lessening your total square footage of grass:
- To lessen the square footage of grass, using mulch (wood chips) or gravel to create pathways and sitting/entertaining spaces around the property are wonderful and very popular choices. For those cool nights, we also custom build fire pits for your lovely outdoor seating areas.
- A pond, water feature, or dry stream bed
- More garden beds and/or larger garden beds
- Loose the mower completely and stop wasting precious time and water. Do what we did at Pura Vida Tropical Gardens, and replace your *entire* lawn with wood chips ! It looks clean, help retain moisture around plants, and besides a new layer of wood chips needed to be added yearly, it's maintenance free ! One of the biggest benefits comes from when the wood chips decompose. Over time as the wood chips decompose it creates a super rich fungal dominated compost full of nutrients that you can shovel up and add into your garden beds for the ultimate organic fertilizer.
With the increased interest in sustainability, many homeowners are rethinking their options. Going lawnless will cut back on your water usage, the time you spend maintaining your yard and the amount of chemicals you use to keep it looking good. The lawnless landscaping trend is quickly catching on in many parts of the country. Ditch the grass and wasteful irrigation. We can help bring new life and style to your landscape.
